Galvanized Finish Dump Trailer vs. Painted Dump Trailer: Pros and Cons
As you shop for a dump trailer, you’ll notice that one main difference is some dump trailers are painted while others are galvanized. There are plenty of excellent manufacturers from Sure-Trac trailers to Midsota trailers, and they all seem to have both options available. You can’t help but ask yourself “Is there even a difference?!” Of course there is! There is a difference between the two, and here we will highlight the pros and cons of each option.
Galvanized Trailers – Pros and Cons
Pros:
One of the best aspects of galvanized trailers is how rust-resistant they are. While exposed metal is generally vulnerable to the elements, the galvanization process provides a long-lasting barrier to protect the steel frame of your trailer.
Galvanized trailers struggle in certain climates due to high humidity and increased salt content in the air or water; those in the Midwest need not be concerned with these possible degradations. It is far more likely that you will need to do just about every other maintenance task before you notice a single rust spot. Another upside to galvanized finishes is that they do not need to be washed as often as painted trailers to keep looking great.
Cons:
Given that you are looking for a dump trailer, you will likely be out in the field throughout the summer months. As you work, your trailer will reflect more sunlight, which will not only make being near the trailer uncomfortable but make touching it become a real hazard. It may sound like a nitpicky downside, but it’s one to keep in mind if this is a piece of equipment that you’ll be using often.
Painted Trailers – Pros and Cons
Pros:
Painted trailers can absorb sunlight better than galvanized trailers. This makes them a great option for those using their dump trailer for commercial purposes. When you are using your trailer all day, every day, you will want to work with something as comfortable as possible. Another upside is that they look great with your logo printed on the sides, giving your business some extra visibility and publicity in your area.
Cons:
When the paint has been compromised, rust can start to take over. Painted trailers look great coming off the lot, but take it down a few gravel roads and you might start to notice some wear and tear. To avoid this, you may need to put a fresh coat of paint on it every few years as well as wash it frequently to keep it looking great.
