A quiet moment on the lake with the sun warming your skin and a tug on the line. What better way to spend an afternoon? At M&G Trailer Sales, we can appreciate the love of fishing for bass, walleye, catfish and more on a peaceful Minnesota lake. For all the outdoorsmen and women who shop our trailers, we made a list of some of the best spots for fishing in Minnesota. From the shores of Lake Superior in the east to Otter Tail Lake in the west, fishing in Minnesota has never been easier.
LAKE MILLE LACS
In north central Minnesota, Mille Lacs is known for its walleye fishing. Anglers can visit year-round. In winter, it’s one of the biggest spots for ice fishing in Minnesota. Although, to keep the walleye population intact, there are regulations requiring catch-and-release fishing only. Don’t fret if you want to bring home a trophy, or a delicious dinner, there are plenty of other species you’re free to take home. This includes muskies, northern pikes, smallmouth bass and more.
NORTH SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR
Minnesota is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” for a reason, and Lake Superior is likely the state’s most famous. The western section of the lake splits Minnesota from Wisconsin, and our great state enjoys the beauties of the north shore. You can choose local boat rentals, guided tours or fishing charters. On the other hand, Lake Superior and its tributaries are often located in public land, so you’re free to show up and fish in your favorite spot, wherever that may be. You’ll find native species like trout, salmon, walleye and more. Some piers you can try casting off are Sawbill, Crescent and Hogback.
ST. CROIX RIVER
While Minnesota might be known for lakes, our beautiful river ecosystems shouldn’t be overlooked. The St. Croix River has a variety of fish species: walleye, bass, panfish, catfish, sturgeon and muskie being a few. In total, more than 60 fish species have been recorded! Ask a local guide where the best spots to cast are and note that the minimum length for keepers is 15 inches. There are also plenty of campgrounds and resorts along the St. Croix River, popular with fishermen and women.
OTTER TAIL LAKE
Part of the Otter Tail River chain, Otter Tail Lake is known for the best walleye fishing in Minnesota. Almost 60% of the lake is less than 15 feet deep and its completely surrounded by beautifully developed shores. Anglers of all ages can enjoy Otter Tail Lake year-round, but May to June is the prime fishing season. In addition to walleye, you can catch plenty of large and smallmouth bass and other native Minnesota species.
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
Of course, no fishing tour of Minnesota is complete without a stop at the iconic American wonder that is the Mississippi River. Fish from the shore, in a canoe or a large boat with tons of urban development and boat rentals along the river. The Mississippi River is known as a world-class smallmouth bass fishery, with miles and miles of healthy habitat and beautiful fish.
ANNIE BATTLE LAKE
Also known as the heritage fishery by local fishermen, Annie Battle Lake is known for its seclusion and abundant wildlife. Located in Glendalough State Park, south of Otter Tail Lake, Annie Battle Lake has been able to foster a lively, biodiverse environment. This lake supports populations of bluegill, northern pike, largemouth bass and walleye.
LAKE VERMILLION
Another necessary stop on your fishing tour of Minnesota, Lake Vermillion has a total of 1,200 miles of shoreline and 40,000 acres of water. Even better for boaters, it includes 635 islands! With some of the best fishing in Minnesota, anglers can find bass, black crappie, brown bullhead, bluegill, golden shiner, pumpkinseed, white sucker and more. You can’t miss this beautiful, thriving lake.
